By the time Karen had shown up fifty minutes later, Jared’s doctor had been in the room about twenty minutes. As Jared became aware of the sound of running feet coming down the hallway, his gaze turned towards the door just in time to see her come bursting in to the room.

Seeing him sitting propped up in the bed had stopped her dead in her tracks, as surely as if she had struck a wall. Frozen in a curious jumble of anxiety, incredulity, and thankfulness, she stood in the doorway for a long moment, lost in the very sight of him. Then, as he held out one hand towards her; she came forward, kissed him gently on the side of the face, and stood over his bed in wonder.

“Hi Babe.” Those simple words he spoke released a torrent of emotions within her. As soon as he said them, she laid her head on his chest, broke down, and cried.

As the Doctor left the room to give them some privacy, Jared did the only thing he could for his wife. And as God would have it; the only thing he could do is exactly what she needed the most.

He held her gently and told her that he loved her.

After what seemed like the sweetest and most soul-felt eternity Jared had ever experienced; her deep sobbing subsided as he stroked her hair. Cautiously, she pulled back to look him in the eyes and gave him a timid smile. For the first time since seeing him miraculously awake, all of the warnings the doctors had given her began to flood back. Jared had been in a deep coma for a year now. They had told her that he might never wake up; but also that if he did wake up, there might be unforeseen side effects from the coma.

A coma was the brain’s way of healing itself after sustaining traumatic damage. And the key words, they told her, were "brain" and "damage". Jared may wake up with no memory of recent events, maybe with no memory at all. There may be other physical impairments that couldn’t be diagnosed until he was awake. Things like hearing or vision loss or even speech impediments.

And, more dramatically, it was not unusual for there to be complete readjustments in his personality. People had awakened from comas only to find their likes and dislikes to be very different than what they were before they were injured. And on the rare occasions, they sometimes ended up with a totally changed lifestyle than what they had before. After telling this to one of her friends; they encouraged her to watch a movie called “Regarding Henry” in which Harrison Ford played a man who woke up from a coma after having been shot in the head.

Later, after seeing the movie, she discussed it with the doctors and was told what she had seen was pretty much what she could well expect as it pertained to the physical therapy and rehabilitation.

All that being said, Karen was not quite prepared to see Jared awake and in such an aware state.
